SIERRA HOTEL AERONAUTICS - Thinking outside the box...
The unmistakable shape of the F4U Corsair incorporated the largest engine available in its time: the 2,000 hp 18-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial. To extract as much power as possible a massive Hamilton Standard Hydromatic three-blade propeller with a diameter of 13 feet 4 inches was used. The problem was, it was almost impossible to make the landing gear struts long enough to provide clearance for the large propeller.
The ingenious solution was an inverted gull wing, which considerably shortened the required length of the main gear legs. The much loved Bent Wing Bastard was born!
